FAQs

What can I expect in a first appointment?

1

The first appointment is an opportunity to discuss approaches to therapy, get to know you, what’s been challenging for you recently, and to collaboratively explore goals together for future sessions.

You will receive consent forms and questionnaires prior to the appointment, which can be explored further in the session.

How long does an appointment go for?

2

All appointments are up to 50 minutes of individual therapy, leaving 10 minutes for clinical documentation.

How many sessions will I need?

3

The length of treatment is determined based on individual circumstances, needs and goals, and the treatment approach. Your psychologist will explore this with you in a collaborative manner.

Typically, you will be referred for 6 sessions to begin with. Please note that the first 2-3 sessions are usually focused on information gathering and assessment, prior to moving into the treatment phase.

Do I need a referral?

4

You can self-refer for psychology supports without a referral, however a Mental Health Treatment Plan from a General Practitioner allows you to claim up to 10 Medicare rebates per calendar year. If you’re eligible for Medicare, you can claim back up to $145.25 per session with a Clinical Psychologist.

How often should I have appointments?

5

Evidence suggests that frequent appointments to begin with have better outcomes for improvement and recovery. It is recommended to attend initially weekly or fortnightly (biweekly), then transitioning to longer gaps for maintenance (Tiemans et al, 2019). Frequent appointments allow for greater progress, continuity and momentum in the assessment phase, and precision in your treatment.

Of course, we understand that this will also depend on your individual circumstances and capacity.

You and your psychologist can discuss and decide on the right frequency together.
